Your tour starts from Charles Coletti Square, the beating heart of the village, a place that tells of the origins and identity of San Donato Val di Comino. Here, the past and the present are harmoniously intertwined: ancient stone buildings, traditional architecture and the presence of a centuries-old fountain welcome you, creating a unique atmosphere charged with history.

Named after an important figure in the community, the square has been the scene of countless events, demonstrations and popular gatherings, and is now a landmark for residents and visitors alike. Sit on one of the benches, observe the architectural details and listen to the murmur of the elders who still tell old stories.

Every corner of Carlo Coletti Square is an invitation to learn about centuries-old traditions, from craft markets to local celebrations, where art and culture come together to create a multi-sensory experience. In this space, where modernity blends with historical heritage, there is an air of authenticity and continuity, making this the ideal starting point for an itinerary that will take you along the paths of time and memory.

Continuing along the route, you head to the historic Door to Greek, also known as the Clock Gate, an imposing structure that marks the entrance into the medieval town. Built in the 14th century, this gate was originally designed to defend the town, serving as a military bulwark and a testament to the defensive needs of the time. The crenellated tower that overlooks the gateway, once essential for the control and protection of the territory, still retains traces of its original function, while modifications over the centuries have transformed it into terraced housing that blends seamlessly into the urban fabric.

As you walk under the majestic arch, imagine the ancient battles and legends that tell of hanging brigands, a symbol of an ancient and severe justice. Be surprised by the evocative layering of history that each stone tells: here, time seems to flow differently, and every architectural detail will transport you to a time of knights, towers and wall defenses.

After going through Door to Greek, the tour takes you to Colle Square, a place steeped in charm and historical suggestion, where traces of the Middle Ages are evident in every detail.

This square, with its characteristic architecture and the presence of ancient masonry remains, represents the fulcrum of the historic center, where access gates, such as the famous Porta a Ponente and the one known as Porta a Maestro, are integrated into an urban framework that tells of the stratification and evolution of the village. Walking along the streets that open onto Piazza Colle, you will notice the presence of the holy steps, evidence of the popular devotion and pilgrimages that, over the centuries, have animated this sacred space. Every step, every corner, tells stories of artisans, merchants and wayfarers who have passed through this territory, leaving an indelible imprint in the collective memory.

The route continues to the Church of St. Donatus Martyr, a sacred place rich in spirituality that has attracted pilgrims and devotees since ancient times. This church, which was once part of the Lombard duchy of Spoleto, was entrusted to the Benedictines in 778 and has been the center of the village's religious faith and culture ever since.

During the 16th century, the local community spearheaded restoration and expansion work, transforming the interior into three naves decorated with stucco, friezes and gilding, evidence of the craftsmanship and deep devotion of the people of Sandonatis. The 18th-century frescoes by Gaspare Capricci intensely narrate the events in the life of the martyred saint, while the imposing doorway, adorned with a scene in which Jesus drives the merchants out of the temple, recalls the ancient prohibition against turning the sacred into a place of commerce.

From the heart of the village, the path takes you to the Medieval Tower of the Counts of Aquino, an imposing structure that dominates the landscape and offers breathtaking views of the Comino Valley. Built in the 13th century, the tower was erected by the famous Counts of Aquino, a symbol of power and military strategy, and is one of the town's most striking and iconic features.

The structure, with its square base and height silhouetted against the sky, was originally equipped with an unusual access door, reached through a strategically placed window to the south, accessible by ladders or ropes, a testament to the defensive ingenuity of the time. During your tour, you can admire the orientation of the tower, designed according to solar declinations to indicate the four cardinal points and to follow the path of the sun on the days of the equinoxes and solstices, turning it into a true ancient compass. Legends include an underground tunnel that connected the tower to the crypt of the Sanctuary of San Donato, guarded by a dragon, a symbol of myth and mystery.

This stop will give you not only an unparalleled panoramic view, but also an opportunity to reflect on how military power and architectural beauty merged into a single structure, making the tower an indispensable landmark for any fan of history and enchanting views.

Continuing the tour, you will come to theArch of San Donato, also known as Porta a Levante, the main access road to Castrum Sancti Donati. This imposing structure, characterized by an elegant pointed arch, represents the gateway through which the village welcomed those arriving from the historic Via Marsicana, linking the urban and rural worlds and marking a fundamental passage in the history of the territory.

Renovated after the 1349 earthquake and adapted to the French style by the Cantelmo family, the Arch of San Donato still retains the stone hinges that once supported the gates, a symbol of its original function of control and defense. As you walk through this area, you will also notice the area called "Ammarieglie," which recalls the names of ancient noble families, testifying to the historical and cultural richness of the community.

The atmosphere around this ancient gateway is charged with spirituality, as, during July 29 each year, the patron saint appears to bless the village, offering an exciting and evocative spectacle.

Here, take photographs and be inspired by the perfect fusion of art, history and nature, which makes this stop a true gem of a route and an invitation to reflect on the passage of time and the continuity of traditions.

Quadrari Palace, © Alessio Pellegrini

Your itinerary then leads you to Quadrari Palace, an elegant mansion that encompasses centuries of history, culture and innovation. Renovated in the first half of the 19th century by the illustrious Giustino Quadrari, the palace today represents a landmark not only for architecture but also for the cultural heritage of San Donato Val di Comino. As you stroll along the facade, you will notice the major balcony decorated with the initials "G Q," evidence of the contribution of a prominent figure who was able to enhance local traditions and history.

The interior, embellished with vaulted ceilings and pavilions decorated with frescoes dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, offers a glimpse of the refined artistry of the time, while along the staircase one can read epigraphs from the Roman era, discovered during archaeological research that highlighted the deep connection between past and present.

Palazzo Quadrari is also a symbol of cultural and political ferment: important personalities and intellectuals stayed there, testifying to the value of the residence as a center of dialogue and renewal.

Cathedral of San Donato, © Alessio Pellegrini

Continuing the tour, you will come to the Cathedral of San Donato Val di Comino, dedicated to Saint Mary and Saint Marcellus Pope, one of the village's oldest and most revered places of worship. The origins of the cathedral are lost in the Middle Ages, when the village expanded toward the valley, and during the 18th century the building was enlarged and transformed into a basilica-like structure, characterized by an elegant Baroque facade and decorations that highlight the richness of sacred art. One of the most fascinating elements inside the cathedral is the pipe organ, probably the work of Cesare II Catarinozzi, the "Stradivari of the organ," which, thanks to its fine workmanship and classical sound system, enchants music and history enthusiasts. Walking through the aisles, you can admire the works of art and sculptures that decorate the spaces, and discover the secret kept under the high altar: the glass urn containing the body of St. Constance, a martyr of the early Christian persecutions.

This place of worship, animated by centuries-old rituals and traditions, offers an experience that goes far beyond a simple tourist visit, providing moments of reflection and spirituality, in which light and art come together to create an atmosphere of intense beauty and sacredness.

View of Largo Lago, © Samuele Tocci

After visiting the cathedral, the tour leads you to the Largo Lago, an open space that represents the authentic and relaxing essence of San Donato Val di Comino. In the center of the square, a majestic century-old plane tree stands as a silent witness to the passing of the years, offering shade and comfort to those who stop to rest after an emotionally rich walk.

Around the plane tree, benches and small resting spots invite dialogue and contemplation, while the slow flow of daily life is intertwined with memories of the past. From the northeastern side of the square, an evocative path winds among ancient farms and dry stone walls, leading you toward the Vallone dell'Obaco and the Valle d'Ischia, offering panoramic views where nature blends with history. The name "Largo Lago" originates from an ancient artificial lake, once essential for water management and the operation of the local mill, and still evoking stories of ancient craft traditions.

In this space, every step reveals details of a rich and varied past, made up of small tragedies and great rebirths, in an environment where natural beauty and historical heritage come together to provide an unforgettable experience, ideal for those who wish to slow the pace and be carried away by the authentic charm of the area.

Spuort of the Flood, © Alessio Pellegrini

The tour ends with a particularly memory-laden stop: the Spuort of the Flood, a place that testifies to the strength of nature and the resilience of San Donato Val di Comino. On Sept. 28, 1798, a violent flood divided the village, leaving behind the destruction of numerous homes and even the church of the Annunziata, an event that deeply marked the history of the community.

Here, amidst a painting by Luciano Tocci and a handcrafted wrought-iron lantern, the site has been restored with care and passion, transforming itself into a living memorial to the courage and resilience of the people. As you walk through this symbolic place, you can read ancient chronicles, imagine the roar of the water and feel the weight of time that has seen tears and hopes flow. The Flood Spuort is not just a geographical point, but a true open-air museum of memory, where history and art come together to convey deep emotions. Stop for a few moments, let the events of that tragic day unfold and reflect on how, despite everything, the village was able to transform pain into strength and unity.

This final stop is the perfect epilogue to a tour that has taken you through centuries of history, offering an authentic and moving look at the life and resilience of San Donato Val di Comino.
